PROGRAM DETAILS

In addition to the Cardiacare screening, the following additional tests are conducted:
Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (IMT)

Carotid IMT is determined by a painless ultrasound of the neck which provides detailed information on your future risk of heart attack and stroke by measuring the amount of plaque build up in the main artery to the brain. This procedure is uniquely available in Ontario to Wellpoint guests and reflects our commitment to the highest level of patient care through the most up-to-date medical diagnostic procedures available.

Cardiac Blood Work
  • Cholesterol is a fat-like substance in the blood which, if elevated has been associated with heart disease.
  • hs-CRP is most often used to help predict a healthy person's risk of cardiovascular disease. People who have hs-CRP results in the high end of the normal range have 1.5 to 4 times the risk of having a heart attack as those with CRP values at the low end of the normal range.
  • Apolipoproteins are the protein component of lipoproteins - complexes that transport lipids throughout the bloodstream. Apolipoproteins provide structural integrity to lipoproteins and shield the water repellent (hydrophobic) lipids at their center. There are two forms of apolipoprotein A, Apo A-I and Apo A-II. Deficiencies in Apo A-I appear to correlate well with an increased risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD) and peripheral vascular disease.
