Metabolic Assessment
The following biochemical testing is completed during your annual screen assessment:
Haematology:
A test for complete blood count (CBC) is conducted to evaluate the levels of red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC) and platelets. This will screen for anemia, blood disorders and
blood cancers.
Metabolic:
Assessment and screening for diabetes (serum glucose) and gout (serum Uric Acid levels).
Liver Function test:
Assessment of Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST). Any form of hepatic cell damage can result in an elevation in the ALT and AST. The ALT is the most sensitive marker for liver cell damage, while the ratio of the two tests helps the physician diagnose the etiology of the hepatic illness.
Kidney Function Test:
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) and Creatinine is measured to assess baseline renal function. If there is an abnormality, creatinine clearance is measured through a 24-hour specialized renal test.
Electrolytes:
Evaluation of serum sodium, potassium, and chloride to evaluate overall organ function.
Thyroid Function Test ( TSH ):
This blood test measures the levels of thyroid
hormones in your blood stream and is the first step in diagnosing thyroid disease. An abnormal thyroid test will be followed by other tests to determine the exact nature of the problem.
Lipid Profile:
We measure levels of high density lipoproteins (HDL or “good” cholesterol), low density lipoproteins (LDL or “bad” cholesterol), triglycerides, and specific cholesterol ratios to manage the possible health risks associated with high cholesterol levels.
Faecal Occult Blood:
Screening is performed on stool samples to detect the presence of “occult” blood that cannot be seen by the naked eye. This test is effective in the early detection of
colon cancer.
Prostate-Specific Antigen ( PSA ):
PSA is a protein produced by certain cells in the prostrate gland. Elevated levels of PSA in your blood may indicate the presence of prostrate cancer.
CA-125:
CA-125 is a “tumour marker” that is produced by ovarian cancer cells. This blood test is used to detect early signs of ovarian cancer.
